Simple e-mail validation

Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi there Monks, I am doing a simple e-mail validation to make sure the user doesn't leave the filed blank and that the email address have at least the basic information on it. But I know that some thing in my code is not working well. Here is the piece I am talking about it and maybe someone will have a better solution for a simple e-mail validation check:

    To see what your regex actually does you can use YAPE::Regex::Explain:

    This might explain why your regex is nog doing what you hoped it would do.

    For a better solution look on CPAN, for instance Email::Valid sounds promising

    I suggest you to use RFC::RFC822::Address to validate email-addresses and to look at the tutorials on regexes in our tutorials-section.

      I'd like to suggest also Email::Valid and Email::Valid::Loose (for some japanese providers as those do force somtimes users to have non-RFC-compliant email addresses.

    Here are a couple of simple checks: 
    die "Your email address is incorrect.\n";  # Will generate some false 
+negatives.
print "Your email address is correct.\n";  # Will generate some false 
+positives.

    Those checks are simple. They won't be correct, but neither will any "simple" email address validation.

    Anyway, could you be bothered to read the FAQ?

    If you'd like to validate the email address, there are some good implementations of regular expressions to do this available if you look for them. Your regular expression is not adequate to the task.

    Assuming this is a CGI script (from the <br> tag), then simply printing an HTML fragment is also inadequate. You need to emt a complete HTML document. If you look around, you should find many examples of good CGI code, starting with using the CGI module itself.

    Your regexp looks like it includes spaces as valid characters.

      Sounds like a good thing to me! Spaces are allowed in email addresses. Any regexp that doesn't allow for spaces won't be correct.

        Are there some systems that disallow spaces? (trying to figure out where I got that idea...)
