It crashes for me also, but changing mycmp to
sub mycmp { length($main::b) <=> length($main::a) }
seems to fix it. I think this is a bug.
update: This is on v5.8.3 built for i386-linux-thread-multi.
I just tried it again and I can't get your original version to crash. Weird.
