Honestly, I don't have an idea, what do you want to achieve by incrementing john.smith1. IMHO ++ works only for numbers. Evaluating "john.smith1" as a number is resulting in 0 (zero). The increment of 0 is 1! So, your example looks OK to me.

Update:
Sorry, it was a bit late for magic last night. But it is an interesting feature.
