this post freaks me out. it wreaks like propaganda. It doesn't seem posted for discussion. anybody else smell microsoft? am i way off? I know I know.. microsoft doesn't do php.. yadda yadda.. read into it personally I started coding basic, then logo.. then.. and then i did some php- and if i had read this post at that time, i may have thought there was some substance to it... "php is better then perl" - makes me shivver- it's like saying bananas are far superior to coconuts- what th...?? So that's what freaks me out- that a total newbie would not know otherwise. php is not better then perl, nor is perl better then php. Languages are languages. They all have their strenghts and weaknesses. Php is mainly useful for webstuffs. A lot of times php is a great solution for simple things- it's fast to put together something. Like- if you want a randomly selected image to pop up on the screen. Php would be great for that. So would javascript, so would perphaps (ack) asp. perl is a more robust language, it has a steeper learning curve- it is harder to learn. Perl is more "strict" in your syntax- it can be frustrating at first. These two things that appear for one at first- the learning curve, the stricter flow of a program- these things also manifest themselves as virtues rather quickly... if you follow directions, perl will allow you less room for stupidity, security holes, impossible to figure out bugs. and then, my favourite thing about perl; it's simply poetry. if you want a program to run a website- sure.. php. If you want to write a program that wakes you up in the morning, tells you where you left your favourite t-shirt, brings you coffee to bed, warms up your socks and gives you head on call, then perl.
