    ...try to remember that boredom is clinging to a state of mind which I detest but am loth to depart from.

    Then I try to love this state of mind. Having achieved that, I am glad because I then already have departed, and move on.

    This is, essentially, what happens, though I might not always get it until it did.

    --shmem

    _($_=" "x(1<<5)."?\n".q·/)Oo.  G°\        /
                                  /\_¯/(q    /
    ----------------------------  \__(m.====·.(_("always off the crowd"))."·
    ");sub _{s./.($e="'Itrs `mnsgdq Gdbj O`qkdq")=~y/"-y/#-z/;$e.e && print}

    #1. write some obfuscated code

    Well, at least think about writing some obfuscated code.

    Whether it gets written depends on how bored I am, how much free time I have, and (mostly) whether any good ideas come to mind.

    By the way, I've found out the hard way that thinking about obfuscated code just before falling asleep is not a good way to get to sleep :-O

    s''(q.S:$/9=(T1';s;(..)(..);$..=substr+crypt($1,$2),2,3;eg;print$..$/

      Indeed, thinking about obfuscations or ANYTHING 'interesting' (whose definition depends on the one doing the thinking, naturally) is orthogonal to getting to bed on time.

      Conversely, it seems I don't tend to come up with anything interesting UNLESS I'm currently past "bedtime"... You should've seen how late I was burning the midnight oil for Breaking the indecipherable cipher, courtesy Charles Babbage.. Well, I guess it shows how late in the node :)

      --chargrill
      $,=42;for(34,0,-3,9,-11,11,-17,7,-5){$*.=pack'c'=>$,+=$_}for(reverse s +plit//=>$* ){$%++?$ %%2?push@C,$_,$":push@c,$_,$":(push@C,$_,$")&&push@c,$"}$C[$# +C]=$/;($#C >$#c)?($ c=\@C)&&($ C=\@c):($ c=\@c)&&($C=\@C);$%=$|;for(@$c){print$_^ +$$C[$%++]}

    I try to parse large, messy HTML with a regex and complain when my program core dumps. ;-)

    I was really hoping for an option like "discuss the finer details of programming theory in terms of the cool sh*t I can do with Perl in a Meditation thread" while I was looking through the survey answers. Bummer.

    print substr("Just another Perl hacker", 0, -2);

    What no nethack option?!?

    Oh well I haven't played nethack in quite a while. All I do now is fire up dunnet on xemacs or psychoanalize zippy or some other game that xemacs offers. It is all I need to cure any boredom or kill some time.

      Personally, I prefer the hitchhiker game as a time-waster. (Nethack's good fun though.)

    Whatever happened to "engage in sexual activity" option?
      Whatever happened to "engage in sexual activity" option?

      It was left out so that those of us who live alone would not be forced to make an embarrassing admission.

        how ironic a user named syphilis would be commenting on a sexually oriented topic :-D
        meh.
        You should notice that I specifically wrote "sexual activity" not "self (?:gratific|manipul)ation".

    If I'm at work, I read SoPW and answer whatever I can. If I'm at home... well, I'm never bored at home, thanks to my one-year-old son. :)

    It's all fine and dandy until someone has to look at the code.

    On a planet as large and varied as this one, how can anyone be bored?

      how can anyone be bored?

      Have you found out yet?

      I've been procrastinating being bored. I plan to spend some of my time being bored when I retire.

      Cheers, Sören

        No, I haven't yet found out about boredom, and like you I'm putting it off. I doubt I'll be bored during retirement, at least not until/unless I end up physically unable to do much of anything.

        Since I'm only 44 years old, I haven't yet found the time to be bored.

      Thus speaks a man without a job!
        Actually, I'm self employed -- so I have many jobs, some of them (those that take up the bulk of my time) involve programming in Perl.

        When I worked for wages, I was always involved in interesting projects, which might explain why I've so often been down-sized, right-sized, reorganized, restructured, made redundant, become unnecessary, been over-qualified and/or over-compensated right out of a job. I can't win that game, so I'm not going to play it any more.

        But I'm still not bored!

      you can be bored when at school, the monotony is numbing

    When I'm bored I usually ... am at work. At least a screaming boss would be interesting. Not fun, and not good, but it wouldn't be boring.

    In those rare moments when I am bored, I usually fall asleep or go to the beach and look at the different beautiful girls walking there.

    I'm not bored. I only procrastinate by writing useless Perl modules for my own use, then never use them.

    Does anyone really plays tetris anymore?
    I find sokoban much more entertaining, so my vote goes for it.

    P.S. Yes, I even installed it on my mobile phone :-)

    Listen to Bhagavad_Gita

    -- In accordance with the prarabdha of each, the One whose function it is to ordain makes each to act. What will not happen will never happen, whatever effort one may put forth. And what will happen will not fail to happen, however much one may seek to prevent it. This is certain. The part of wisdom therefore is to stay quiet.
