It doesn't _not_ recommend it either. It doesn't mention it - not something that can be extrapolated. In fact PBP says very little on the subject of parameter validation, only mentioning the idea in one section, Ch.9 "Argument lists". I was struck by this meager discussion of the subject. (Re-reading PBP again - on my list of yearly redos)
