jfroebe has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi,

I've asked on the Eclipse mailing lists but have received only one reply which consisted primarily of "bugger off". My question is whether or not anyone is working on or considering to work on a plugin for Eclipse that will function as an IDE for Perl. Work is being done on various languages in the Eclipse Tools Project" including COBOL of all things ;-)

I'm rather hopeful that a Perl plugin is in the works for Eclipse as the workgroup development appears to be rather good.

Amazingly, the answer is in one of the Perl FAQ documents. perlfaq3 provides insight as well as a working web link:

Is there an IDE or Windows Perl Editor?

Perl programs are just plain text, so any editor will do.

If you're on Unix, you already have an IDE--Unix itself. The UNIX philosophy is the philosophy of several small tools that each do one thing and do it well. It's like a carpenter's toolbox.

If you want an IDE, check the following (in alphabetical order, not order of preference):

    Eclipse

    http://e-p-i-c.sf.net/

The Eclipse Perl Integration Project integrates Perl editing/debugging with Eclipse.

    ...{Remainder of the list truncated}...

Thanks! :) The problem I guess is that it really doesn't appear to be promoted on the Eclipse page. That or I'm just not very observant.

EPIC has been around for some time and has been discussed here more than once.

    Hi Jason,
check out also the nice http://www.easyeclipse.org/site/distributions/lamp.html.
It is a packaged version of Eclipse + e.p.i.c. + many other things, I believe, which works quite well.

I tried it after several failed attempts to install Eclipse + e.p.i.c., and I found it as easy as running ./eclipse from the command line!

I still have some doubts on using Eclipse at all, but nevertheless it's worth trying... ;-)
