One of my favorite one-liners does the renaming thing, though I've never tested it it on subdirectories. FWIW:

find . | perl -ne'chomp; next unless -e; $oldname = $_; s/aaa/bbb/; ne
+xt if -e; rename $oldname, $_'
[download]
