Web Hosting for Monks - Gone Live!

by jcwren (Prior)
on May 08, 2001 at 03:50 UTC ( [id://78722]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Well, the server is (mostly) configured, and a few folks have accounts.

Still haven't settled on a "real" domain yet, and am looking for some useful suggestions (perlhunks.com is out). I still like perlskunks.com, but it hardly sounds professional if you wanted to point some one to it as an example of your work. Something tasteful might be nice. Someone wishing to remain anonymous has perlmonk.org and perlmonk.com, which I really like. I'm planning on seeing if s/he'd like to loan/donate/sell it.

We're running FreeBSD 4.3, on a AMD K6-III/450, with 192MB of RAM, a 13GB drive (about 10GB of user space), all on a blinding 144kpbs IDSL line. It's pretty usable, and if it all this goes over well, I may consider replacing it with a 800Mhz Athlon with 256MB of memory (and ugrade my primary workstation to a 1.3Ghz Athlon, with 768MB memory. Yea!)

Access is via SSH2, only. Apache 1.3.19 is installed, along with mod_perl 1.25, mySQL 3.23.36, and PHP 4.04p1 (no gripes, I like PHP, and it'll give some folks a playground for an *objective* comparison). emacs, vi, pico and nano are available, as are pine and elm. The default shell is 'bash'. Perl modules and other software are being installed on an "as-needed" basis (as opposed to grabbing all of CPAN and installing it).

Once we get the real domain, I plan on adding POP3 support, and probably mail relaying. Since I don't know what the heck I'm doing, I'm sure there will be a learning curve where I screw everything up...

If you are interested in an account, please EMAIL me (not /MSG) at jcwren@jcwren.com and supply me with your perlmonks user name, and a email address. I'll send back password and login details. If you are one of those people with screwy characters in your name (j.a.p.h. and $CBAS_or_die), we'll have to figure out what to do about your kind. Access is yourname.pm.tinymicros.com and pm.tinymicros.com/~yourname.

That's about everything I can think of at the moment. Any question, please e-mail me at the above address.

This is completely off the top of my head, but since we're talking about perlmonks shells, how about:

    www.perlbeach.com
    www.monkbeach.com

yes? no? probably not, but it seems that logging in to perlmonks is a tiny vacation in the workday...

    Other suggestions?
    jynx

    Update:Sorry, sorry, that should be:

    www.perlbeach.org
    www.monkbeach.org

    humblest apologies... :-)

    perlcloister.org

Sticking to the theme, without any silly misspellings or bad puns.

Hey, I really like this one. Others, like perlmonk.org, seem almost deceitful. How many false hits are going be generated from people trying to get to http://www.perlmonks.org? perlcloister.org seems very nice. Of course, if vroom has no issue with perlmonk.org, then I suppose it's a moot point, but I don't really feel comfortable with it.

      Cheers,
      Ovid

How about pmwh.(net|org)? Perl Monks' Web Hosting?

Great! I really loved the idea from the first time I've read about it. I'd just like to know what flavor of vi it will be? I think most that'd use it would vote for vim? I haven't tried vim6.0 yet so I can't tell how stable that might be but it has a great feature that most'd like: folding :-)

For the MUA part I'd sugguest mutt - it's the successor of elm :-) And elms development has stagnated nevertheless (I wouldn't bet on any significant change in that...)

    perlmunks.org, perhaps?
premchai21 casts a figurative negative vote at perlmunks.(?:org|net).
premchai21 casts a figurative positive vote at perlmonkey.(?:org|net).
premchai21 casts a figurative positive vote at monk(?:s|er)ofpe(?:a?)rl.org.
premchai21 casts a figurative positive vote at perlmonk.net.
premchai21 casts a figurative negative vote at perlskunks.(?:org|net).
premchai21 casts a figurative positive vote at (?:perl|monk)beach.(?:org|net).
premchai21 reads a scroll of end node.

Make that 3 votes for perlmunks.org

In the end, there can be only one!

I'd be glad to donate zenperl.net to perlmonks if there's interest in using that name. I registered it some time ago, but never had a chance to do anything with it.

    zenperl.org is also available.

monks.pl? (Re: Web Hosting for Monks - Gone Live!)
by Kanji (Parson) on May 11, 2001 at 08:41 UTC

You peeps are all waaaay too /\.(?:com|net|org)\z/-centric; why not go for something with a little more funky like monks.pl?

        --k.

That would be nice, if it's worth the vanity pricing... 700.00 Poland Zlotych yearly plus 20% tax.

      That's ...

(*counts on fingers and toes*) $210 / year including tax.

Now maybe that's worth it, since it's a neat domain name and we might get good karma for helping a small european economy.

Well, my 2 cents for a domain name...

Keeping with the religious theme maybe perlclergy?
    How about perlmanse or perlymanse?
Com, net, and org are available for all
    Then again maybe not.
