Perl is a tool and different tools have different uses. Imagine asking "I want to know the major advantage of a fork?". Thats more or less the same kind of question, you are asking. If you want to compare it to some other language, ask what you want it compared to. If you have a specific problem area, ask if perl is useful in that area.

    It is a survey question; a typical homework assignment designed to get a student to learn what the features of a fork are by reading an introductory chapter and table of contents. Literature teachers are also fond of this kind of assigment, they call it a book report. Some try to avoid reading the book regardless of how short it is.
