Call for perl from other applications

Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Good day monks..
I have a small perlTk application that takes a string input and generates a new string.
Is there a way to automate this process, so that my users don't need to copy the string from e.g "Firefox, emesene" and paste it to my App and then go back to firefox and paste the new string. If there was a way to just let the user select the text in firefox and hit a shortcut combination to do the process and substitute the selected string with the new one??
I am targeting Gnome users.

It really depends on the application and its environment, but since you're talking about firefox, it should be possible to provide some sort of extension that would automate the process. Have a look at greasemonkey if you want to experiment, and aren't afraid of messing with javascript and the (frankly quite ugly) mozilla XUL/internal JS bindings.
