Problem sending html using sendmail

Bob H has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hello kind Monks

The following code

open (MAIL,"| $SEND_MAIL"); print MAIL "To: $to\n"; print MAIL "From: $fromaddr\n"; print MAIL "Reply-to: $replyaddr\n" if $replyaddr; print MAIL "Subject: extra $subject\n"; print MAIL "Mime-Version: 1.0\n"; print MAIL "Content-type: text/html; charset=\"iso-8859-1\"\n"; print MAIL "X-Mailer: Perl Socket Mailer\n\n"; print MAIL "$message"; print MAIL "\n.\n"; close(MAIL);

happily sends plain text, but incorrectly, also sends html code as plain text (showing the code).

The lines

print MAIL "Mime-Version: 1.0\n"; print MAIL "Content-type: text/html; charset=\"iso-8859-1\"\n";

are not appearing in the headers of the sent email.

When I include html in the message, there's an error message in the email headers:

X-me2uweb-MailScanner-SpamCheck: not spam, SpamAssassin (cached, +score=0.986, required 5, BAYES_05 -1.11, HTML_MESSAGE 0.00, HTML_MISSING_CTYPE 2.10, HTML_SHORT_CENTER 0.00, NO_RELAYS -0. +00)

which underlines that the content type is missing.

I'm wondering if the problems is in the perl code, or in the way that sendmail operates or the Red Hat Linux server we're running the script on is set up?

Any pointers or answers gratefully received.

Many thanks

Bob

    Content-Type with a capital T

    Though as the previous poster said you really shouldn't be doing this manually.

    Is your mailserver case-sensitive? Try:
    print MAIL "MIME-Version: 1.0\n"; print MAIL "Content-Type: text/html; charset=\"iso-8859-1\"\n";

    update - also Reply-To:
