24 Nov 2009: I just started learning Perl from "SAMS Teach Yourself Perl in 24 Hours" 3rd Ed by Clinton Pierce in about August 2009.
Perl is the first computer language I've attempted to learn because:
1) It is 'free' and open source,
2) The community spirit and support, and
3) Automation and screen scraping abilities.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.04.
