I'd have thought the idiomatic Perl solution would splice:

sub chunky {
    my ($n, @strs) = @_;
    my $str = '';

    $str .= join (' ', splice @strs, 0, $n) . "\n" while @strs;
    return length $str ? $str : "\n";
}
