Anyway reverse-engineering a software is legal in some countries (e. g. in Finland), if it is required for e. g. assuring interoperability between systems.
Reverse engineering != retrieve source code.

Reverse engineering is finding out what a program does. It does not require to find out how it does it (which is what the source code reveals).
