Actually, I now think I can solve my problem better using Data::Alias. But I'll have to test to see if this aliasing plays well with shared variables.

That too is an interesting idea. It's not something I've ever thought to try. My gut feel says it's not going to work, but please be sure to come back and tell us how you get on.
