Star infront of label

Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Dear Monks,

I've seen some code that does recursive directory search and the directory label had a star infront of it like this

*DIR

What is the use of this star ? and where should it be used and why ???
