palkia has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi
Till this day I don't really know what's the difference between SMS & Text messaging (in cells), which is why I keep my question generalized ^^ :
Can you recommend (from positive experience) about modules,
that can be used to (freely) send SMS and/or text messages to cell phones (would wide).

Thx

Update: oww yeah (forgot ^^), also if you know of such website that would be gr8 too.
The last one I tried wouldn't accept the fact that in my area you need 10 digits and not 9, lol.
Thx again :-]

It is a simple matter of contacting your phone provider, the party responsible for routing email to sms... sms to phone :)

Are you looking to send a small number of messages for personal use, or are you looking to run a busness that sends thousands of messages per day?

If it is for personal use, then most service providers have a web gateway you can use which should be easy to script. You can also connect to the serial port of your phone and send SMS messages via well documented AT commands.

If it is for a bussness, then there are companies that specialies in bulk sending messages, and depending on how fast you want them delevered and how reliable they need to be you should pay between a half and one tenth of the usual rate charged to the public. These companies usualy have SOAP or REST APIs you can use.

In the middle are number of methods for bulk sending messages without paying for them, usualy via short lived companies who are loosing money on every costomer, but making up for it in volume. A lot of the SMS messages on CPAN work this way, and of obvous reasons they are not very reliable.

If you know the provider ahead of time, you can use the provider's Mail-to-SMS gateway. I personally do this all the time when sending text messages from operational scripts to admins. Wikipedia has a decent list of gateways. Then you can just use your favorite (mine -- MIME::Lite) mail module.
