The two lines you quoted are not "essentially the first two lines" of the synopsis. Looking at Thread::Pool, the first three lines are:

 use Thread::Pool;
 $pool = Thread::Pool->new(
  {
[download]

So, likely ->new() takes a hashref instead of a list as arguments.

Oh, I see. I was looking at the documentation for version 0.1: http://search.cpan.org/~micb/ThreadPool-0.1/Pool.pm#SYNOPSIS which was the first hit that came on Google. That seems to be a bloody good reason to not use Google to look-up perl documentation. Use perldoc.perl.org for core perl search.cpan.org for CPAN modules local versions of the above via perldoc both those sites allow you to choose which version of a module to view. perldoc shows you the docs of whatever version you've got installed. Better still (IMO), why not use an editor that supports perl documentation look-ups? There's plenty of them around.
