You suggest these to someone who is yet to learn about references? They are excellent books, but really not appropriate for a beginner!

    Each of them look at refs from a practical point of view - you don't learn to ride a bike by reading about what a pedal is. That said maybe HOP is a gear change too far.

      On the other hand you don't learn the basics of riding from "Tune my BMX" either.
