    While I generally agree with not reinventing the wheel etc. ... IMHO, when performance matters (and it usually does in this domain), it's well worth checking out alternatives to what BioPerl provides, as BioPerl's solutions often tend to be rather slow.

[Corion]: ambrus: yeah, but the longer I think about it the more I come to the conclusion that you shouldn't try to mix threads and fork anyway :)
[ambrus]: Corion: exactly. by pre-forking you avoid that, because you spawn processes from a smaller process that never uses threads and is kept only to spawn things
