"By no means extinct" and "very common" are almost opposites. AE was a theosophist and a spiritualist. Same with Yeats. You are dreaming if you think that the average literate Englishperson in 1846 believed that fairies existed.

My point is that the belief you attribute to Ada's insanity is in fact a religious belief that underwent a significant popularization during Ada's lifetime.

I can understand why you equate this belief with insanity, but you are mistaken. People who can sense non-animal consciousness have never gotten much farther in explaining themselves than those trying to describe colors to the blind...
