mmh, I see... The problem is very silly. I forgot to add a last line to print the variable.

my $codeAsText = do{ local( @ARGV, $/ ) = $0; <>; }; print $codeAsText;

Perhaps you meant:

open (my $foo, $0); print <$foo>; close $foo;
