There is a good book on how improbable certain science-fiction-inventions are: Michio Kaku: Physics of the Impossible.
Here the author analyzes the ideas and investigates, whether they are just "very complicated" to create, whether they need some scientific breakthrough before they can be realized or whether they are in conflict with some physical laws (which need to be proven incorrect before the invention can be realized).
Happy reading!
