Why would you want to re-invent a wheel when you don't know how to use an existing one.
Because you have a problem to solve now, and the learning curve for the wheel is steep. Knowing about the wheel may be good enough. You can come back to it at your leisure later, and you'll have the benefit of having solved the problem the wheel purports to solve, so that you'll better appreciate it. Or perhaps the wheel requires an axle, and the axle requires a transmission, and before long you've picked up half a car along with the wheel, and your CGI now takes 5 seconds to start, and your ISP doesn't support mod_perl. You might still want to know about the wheel, but you also want to know about alternatives.
