I had thought it had to do with filehandles, and had
not realised this use for it.
As for the rest of your improvements... well, I'll
have to look at those when I have more time.
update:
I've looked at them now, and they all seem pretty
straightforward; you just did a more thorough job
of golfing than I.

<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
