This is a really excellent explanation. Thank you very
much. It can be tricky to keep track of names, scopes and
durations while programming but it is certainly harder when
you don't even fully understand what the various concepts
represent.
Maybe even worth putting somewhere like the tutorials
section?

Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
