my @textsplit= split /\./, $text;
my $p= pop @textsplit;
foreach (reverse @textsplit) {
my $new->{$_}= $p;
$p= $new;
}
But this naturally won't work if you want to convert many text lines with common parts (i.e. "a.b.c.d" and "a.b.n.m") and want to get one single data structure out of it
UPDATE: davido found a bug in my code. Corrected with addition of $new.

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
