in reply to std dev calculations slow over time
This doesn't speak to the db stuff, but some time back I asked the perlmonks how to calculate basic statistics simple and fast.
So, I offer this up in case it is of help:

By the way, in this situation the "error" term basically amounts to standard deviation, or something close ot it.
