Thanks to this poll, I now know what Rakudo Star is, so that's something. I got the impression that I also need to set up a Parrot VM in order to implement it? So now I know what Parrot is (kind-of). This is way too much information to learn in one day!
Perhaps when I have 2 weeks of free time, I'll give it a whirl. In other words, probably never... | [reply] |

Looks interesting, but I'm going to need some good tutorial content. The synopses are too dense for me. The Perl 6 book (http://github.com/perl6/book) looks like it might be pretty good... What I really want is a Camel book for Perl 6, or possibly an intro book if Damian writes it.

Based solely on the announcement, it looks like Rakudo Star is the "first real release of Perl6" that I was so eagerly looking forward to six or eight years ago. Logically, I should be very excited about this, jumping at the bit to try it out ASAP.
Emotionally, for some reason, I find that's not the case now. At the moment, the idea of playing with Perl6 sounds more like work than fun. How did that happen?
Perhaps it's just because it's August, and it's been eighty degrees in the shade at night with a gazillion percent humidity since late April. Maybe when the weather cools down a bit and I get a couple of decent nights' sleep my enthusiasm for Perl6 will return, eh?

It, and Perl 6, is more like XPLS than Perl 5; Which may not be a bad thing.

What's the migration path for people using perl 5.8.x +? What happens to all our modules? Perl has always been about accomplishing work for me, is Rakudo ready for work and to take on a heavy load in my job or is this largely still early beta and intellectual in nature? Where is the documentation? What do I get from this language that I don't get from perl 5 that would make me want to migrate? These are all questions I would need to be answered in order to make the migration. | [reply] |

Perl 5.12.2 will be out soon, and Perl 5.14 comes out next spring.

That depends on the nature of your work.
Where is the documentation?
Perl 6 Synopses and the Using Perl 6 (book in progress) are good places to start.
What do I get from this language that I don't get from perl 5 that would make me want to migrate?
Better consistency, better defaults, and built-in language features that are (if even possible in Perl 5) syntax extensions.
