FWIW, it seems to be an old problem:

  1. (Aug 22, 08) Seemingly random reply counts?
  2. (Aug 30, 12) Reply counts in Nodes to consider with Show count of all replies
  3. (Apr 25, 17) Number of Replies Count Wrong
  4. (Aug 15, 17) Nodes to Consider: Incorrect Reply Count

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

    Interestingly, it is usually reported in August.
