    Wheres the option "To get a girl"?

      Yes, definetely need an option along the lines of "To Get a Girl" as BUU said... ((heh bloody errr singlist poll *G*))

      On the other hand, I voted "Where I left my partner" as a substitute.

        On the other hand, I voted "Where I left my partner" as a substitute.

        Substitute? That was the primary purpose of that choice. A poll on a geek site that doesn't take boys with no girl into account? That's like the primary audience.

        "To Get a Girl" ... ((heh bloody errr singlist poll *G*))

        What? You don't want to account for girls with no boy? Or perhaps you wanted to strand them in a separate category? I thought I'd be nice and let y'all at least comingle in a category.

        substitute?

    where is the option: about St. Valentine's Day?

    It's an american holiday Germany never had. Just when the florists found out about it, it became publicly known here. And I hate commercial holidays. So I refuse to do anything special on that day.

      It's an italian tradition, see Saint Valentine Day Tradition; the commercial speculation is another story...

      Ciao, Valerio

        Italian? Couldn't find a proof for that on the page you mentioned. Instead i found:

        > But the fame which San Valentine all over the world is due to the legend which originated in the anglo-saxon countries

        So not necessarily America, but also (e.g.) England. But to my knowledge Italy is not anglo-saxon ;-)

      Ah, busy improving the reputation of German men vis-à-vis romance, I see. ;)

      Valentine's day is not an American holiday per se, but I'm sure Americans have influenced how it is celebrated in Germany.

        Romance? What's that? Do I *have* to know that? Sounds italian to me. But then "vis-à-vis" sounds very french.

        Do you know that you're confusing me!?

        ;-)

      And your girl let's you get away with that excuse?? Inconceivable!!

      - tye

        Inconceivable!!

        You keep using that word, I don't think it means what you think it means.

      Strictly Speaking Feb 14 is the Catholic Church Feast day of St Valentine of Rome who was put in prison and died there for performing marrage rituals for solders in the Roman Legons (Against the order of the emperor who felt single men fought better).

      It was promoted by the Catholic Church as a clean wholesome subsitute for the Veneralia, a Feast to Venus, which got quite kinky, Or was it the Roman fertility goddess Juno's Feast day, I beleive it is a debated topic.

    Is there any option for multiple answers? I didn't buy a gift, flowers, a card or do anything impractical or romantic (although we did go out for dinner :-).

    There are no options for a girl with a boy who doesn't hate valentine's day!

      No, there are no options for a girl who remembers how much her boy hates Valentine's Day. You could have forgotten that "how much" is "none". But it really just means that he is a good actor.

      Don't make me copy /.'s "Don't complain about lack of options" disclaimer. I hate disclaimers. q-:

    The card. Why is it that most women could receive a diamond pendant necklace, a dozen red roses, and a day at a spa, but they'll get snippy if you don't get a card and Feed the Beast That Is Hallmark?

    One of the things that makes my current SO is so wonderful is that she doesn't believe in all that balderdash, but she still appreciates it if I do it.

    ...I forgot that love isn't about girls and boys anyway (or about boys and boys).

    It's about being related in the spirit. It's about being connected in a way that language can only partially describe.

    If you've ever felt that, then you know what I mean. And sometimes observing a ritual can remind us of the magnitude of what we've created in that relatedness. It can jar us into becoming present to our accomplishment.

    -- Or, we can just buy some roses out of guilt and declare it all to be a sham.

    But get that there is genuinely something to be gained by embracing the sentiment and expressing it fully. And as one of the greatest philosophers of the last century observed, "If you can't be with the one you love, honey love the one you're with!"

On St. Valentine's Day I forgot...

    ...to go home.

    They decided to schedule an upgrade of our accounting system for this weekend. I thought my part of it was going to be about a 4 hour job, but I ended up working until 9 p.m. When I got home, I was still answering work-related calls until around 11:30.

    Fortunately for me, my wife agreed to "reschedule" Valentine's Day for next weekend, which increases our chances of getting into a nice restaurant (and gives me another week to shop for something good).

      Well, my boyfriend spent Valentine's day at the bar with his single friends and then we spent the next day together. We both agreed it was fine. Celebrating love the day after the commercial holiday is fun :).

      i forgot to do something impractical, was too busy doing something *completely* practical - buying a house. not done yet but close to it, any my wife is very grateful. she has this idea that owning a house is better than a box of chocolates and some overpriced flowers.

      well, i guess this is officially the most expensive gift i've ever gotten her, even if it is for both of us :-) --

      if (we're so concerned about equality that we just have to call men 'boys' to balance calling women 'girls') {
      then that should be applied to Valentines Day and the poll's implication that only men needed to do something special for their girls is hyopcritical
      }
      else {we permit different behaviour from ladies and gentlemen and guys should stop letting themselves be called 'boys'}
