Perl is a tool and different tools have different uses. Imagine asking "I want to know the major advantage of a fork?". Thats more or less the same kind of question, you are asking. If you want to compare it to some other language, ask what you want it compared to. If you have a specific problem area, ask if perl is useful in that area.

It is a survey question; a typical homework assignment designed to get a student to learn what the features of a fork are by reading an introductory chapter and table of contents. Literature teachers are also fond of this kind of assigment, they call it a book report. Some try to avoid reading the book regardless of how short it is.

A lot of folk'll say CPAN

      Dear friend,
I think that that guy is beginner of perl and expect some other thing other than CPAN
The big advantage of perl , it is a combination of sed , awk , grep and C
you can do combination of all those things and rocks using perl

As others have already said, Perl is a tool. You would not use a hammer to cut wood, instead you would use it to drive or remove nails. Perl, like every other tool, has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Do you want to know the major advantages of Perl for writing shell script replacements, CGI applications, etc?

Do you want to know the major advantages of Perl when compared to PHP, Python, Java, etc?

    What is the context?

It comes in all colours you can imagine, and then some. I'm quite fond on the "broken praule" line of colours. (Hah! I bet you didn't knew that colour even existed!)
Those are colors? I always thought vanilla and strawberry were flavors.
vanilla and strawberry are flavors, but Vanilla and Strawberry are designer colors.

An advantage of Perl against other language is text processing.
