Duplicate content

Hi Website-Driving-Monks,

just got aware of the fact, that calling this site via different host names (e.g. perlmonks.org, www.perlmonks.org, perlmonks.com) always gives me the content directly.

This produces duplicate content from the perspective of Google (see https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66359?hl=en) and gets a penalty. IMHO it would be better to have a canonical hostname and redirect all other hostnames to the URL with the canonical one.

Another solution is to present the so called canonical tag (see https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139066#2).

I'm pretty sure, it's not the first time, that someone is mentioning that, is it? The goal is clear: Push the ranking for PerlMonks' content.

Best regards
McA

      Hi,

I was pretty sure that this didn't slip through. I was just not aware of the solution.

IMHO it would be "nicer" to have a redirect stating exactly what it does: The content you're are looking for can be found at that URL. But probably there are other reasons which I don't know.

      Thank you for the insights.

      Best regards
      McA

By having two different domains (com/org), you are able to have one session logged in, and one anonymous. The session tokens are good for a single domain. If this is good or not is another debate that has been (and will be) had.

it offhand seems to me that “only one of the three” ought to be “official,” such that the other two redirect to the one.   Every other site that I know about does this.
