I voted "No, my boss won't let me." However, I think it only fair to give a better reason than that.
He won't let me for several reasons:
    1) It costs too much!
    2) It costs too much!
    3) You're not the programmer! You're the marketing guy. (Our programmer uses BBx, BTW)
    4) You're irreplaceable! (So why do I not make more $$$?)
    5) Did I mention that it costs too much?
    6) Oh, yeah. I almost forgot. Because I said so!

Who says that programmers can't work in the Marketing Department?
Or is that who says that Marketing people can't program?
yup !! My boss could of affort the fee, for sure, but he ist not willing to pay the flight - did I mention ... ?

I won't, because I live in Europe, France, Paris. But I'd love to, someday.

Anyway, I'll attend YAPC::Europe in Munich. And since my boss paid for the previous YAPC::Europe in 2000, and 2001. I only have to hope I'll have the same boss in 2002. :-)

Likewise, cos I live in Dublin, Ireland.

      someday...

    No -
    1. Boss won't let me - It's too expensive
    2. Boss won't let me - "You would want how much time off?"
    3. Not in my personal budget at this time
*sigh* but I want to. I really, really do.

    C-.

So what you're saying is that your boss has no interest in developing your value to the company, much less your career.

Give that a good, long think.

      xoxo,

heh. This has been a problem for over a year (budgets were severely slashed at the end of Q2 last year). Already considered and acted on, though response has been slow, and too many employers expect me to make a lateral or backward move. *bah* At least at my current place of employment there is some stability, and plenty of drama, er, humor (here, here and here).

Anyone here want to hire me? I would like to stay in the detroit area, but could be convinced to move. I develop in C++, Perl, and VB. I _can_ do HTML, but feel it's below me and my CS degree, I have strong project management and software architectural skills, I speak average Japanese and French...What? No takers...??

Guess I'll keep looking and toiling at my current grind.

        C-.

One of the side-effects of YAPC not being at the same place every year and waiting for someone(s) to step forward and run the show is that it's not scheduled as far in advance as other conferences. Unfortunately, this opens the door for overlaps which is what happened in my case, so I'll have to break my continuous string of appearances this year. Doh!

Well, let's see... I am Canadian, so right there that states that more money is required... Here would be my costs (in Canadian $$):
    1. Round-trip airfare: $597.82
    2. Cost for the actual conference: $130.16
    3. Cost for single dorm room: $76.56
Now, this is only for the basics! This does not include money for food, spending money, etc. What is the grand total? $804.54. Okay, not TOO bad, but throw food and extras on there and I would need at least $1000. I have in the bank... $280. Maybe my boss would let me have an advanced paycheck... Considering the simple fact that I work at McDonald's, I will say that is not likely!

So I suppose my answer is "No, I cannot attend because I do not have a car and I am too poor at the moment".

(P.S.: I could maybe find cheaper air fares. This is just a quick check I did on Yahoo! Travel)

Anyone need housing?
by Fastolfe (Vicar) on Jun 10, 2002 at 22:21 UTC
I live a block from Washington University here in town and would be willing to put up one or two people for the conference (no charge). E-mail me if you're interested (guy or girl; my roommate is a girl). Some older pictures of the place are available.

I have DSL, wireless LAN, billiards, xbox and HDTV. Please no l33t hax0rZ.

damn, i would kill to have the money for airfare, especially with Fastolfe's offer, but i am unfortunately unemployed right now, and st.louis is a little ways from houston, so i dont get to go
      :( ......maybe next time
It's only about a 15-hour drive from Houston. I've made the trip a few times from San Antonio (where I used to live). It's a solid day, but it's do-able. :)

Probably not, barring any sudden employment offers around the St. Louis area. Of course, Montreal will be hard to top - I hope it returns to Canada someday....

This poll needs a "Dunno Yet" option.

I don't know yet. Probably not. I'm self funded for the time being, and can afford one, or maybe two conferences this year. And there are a couple of good ones to choose from. At the moment, the O'Reilly Open Source conference is higher on the list, and it's likely to exhaust my budget.

Re: Do you plan to attend YAPC::America::North 2002?
by tjh (Curate) on Jun 06, 2002 at 19:49 UTC
At this moment only 7% of the answers are some form of "Yes". Not that monks represent a huge proportion of the conference's public, or that even this poll has any statistical significance really, but...

Sure looks like a great excuse to lobby them to live stream the thing for us! All tracks, all talks, real time. Not only would it be a First, but it'd be more affordable, possibly interactive, and more.

Imagine if a company sent one person, then four others back at the office watched the tracks they were interested in, and used the person on site to pick up books, get autographs, etc. :)

And, wouldn't exhibitors like it if we could interact with booth staff?

'course, that's all just a pipe dream...

I'm thinking of trying to capture the conference via my dinky intel cam and vaio sr7k. I'll have to play with it some to get a feel for how much space I'll need. I'm leaning towards a slideshow with sound kind of idea. Maybe grab so many frames per minute or hour. Of course, it might not be nice copyright-wise to record it and make it available on the web. I suppose I could always ask. Let you know if it works out or not.

No, I'm not going this year as I don't plan to be stateside until August. Happily, I am going to attend YAPC::Europe again this year, so I don't mind too much.

...cannot attend due to calendar conflicts.

(Perhaps that indispensible answer would approximate this too.)

I'd love to attend, and if it were in California, I'd call in sick from work, but summers are our busy season and trying to get away for a few days is nigh impossible.

Besides, I need those couple of days to head to Vegas in August. : )

Some people fall from grace. I prefer a running start...

by htoug (Deacon) on Jun 06, 2002 at 07:18 UTC
There should have been a No, but I will attend YAPC::Europe button somewhere among the choices.

I certainly will go to YAPC::E 2002, and yes: my boss is paying for it.

I am looking forward to meet a number of PerlMonks again.

I live in Europe, but I asked jcwren if he'd post the poll. Why? There have been polls in the past about attending a conference, so I didn't think it was out of place. More importantly, Y'A'N is less than a month away, and I wondered who else would be there (for a possible BOF session and whatnot). It's certainly not a slight on Y'E--last year vroom was kind enough to run Y'E banner ads--it just doesn't make sense to ask questions about Y'E until Septemberish.

But the poll wasn't about YAPC::Europe, the poll was "Do you plan to attend YAPC::America::North 2002". As such, I felt an option "No, but I will attend YAPC::Europe" wouldn't have made much sense.

Or should I have also added an option "And peanut butter is better crunchy?", since that has about as much relevance?

I think YAPC Europe *is* relevant though (to my decision at least). Given limited finances I can only make it to one YAPC, so Europe (being nearer) it is. If there wasn't a European one, I'd probably go to the American one.

        Relevant, no :-) ?

        Cheers,

        Matt

I voted "No, other reason (please post)", because I'm in Europe/Germany/Frankfurt, and North America is too far from here for just a short trip.

But I'll attend YAPC in Munich/Germany/Europe in September.

    Where's the "Not sure" option?

Pricing, at least for this one, is not a consideration because it's so close to home in comparison to yapc's usual venues.

I voted "Yes, my company is paying", but I'm not still 100% certain at this point.

In addition to a new employee to train, a fair 4-5 hour drive (or a surprising $275 for a 30 minute flight), my stepson's birthday, and then murmurs that I'd better not be out of town for my birthday, well, I'm just not sure yet.

    I will not be attending.

Partly because I'm not sure what I will not be attending.

Secondly, despite being the best Perl programmer that this group has, I'm not OFFICIALLY a programmer, and so would not be able to get approval anyway.

I voted "no, I can't afford it" as I'm in the UK and the plane and hotel costs would be too much.

I wish I could be there, though--the orignal plan was to get married the next weekend, but things change.

Get married *at* YAPC. Or am I the only one sick enough to think of that?

Wait, don't start the rumors. I'm not actually doing it. It's just an idea . . . meet at YAPC, marry at YAPC.
