Filtering Nodes to Consider

Although I've not been around on this site too long I've begun to think of myself as part of the community this site has, and as such have started to try to do things which will help the site in general.

The obvious one is to help people, both in answering their nodes and questions in CB. Another important way I thought would be to be reasonably diligent in reading Nodes to consider and making my judgments on the nodes there known.

Today I went to Nodes to consider and instinctively began to read through the nodes there. I read through one, thought "Yes, this really shouldn't be here should it?" so went to click on the Edit button to get it moved only to discover I'd already consider'ed this node.

It's not the first time I'd done this either. I tend to think Nodes to consider only contains nodes which I, personally, should consider and so read it with that view. Maybe I'm just being remarkably stupid in not being able to remember to check if I've already considered a node, but even when I am remembering I find that needing to do this makes the whole process rather more painful than it should ideally be.

The end result is that I'm becoming more reluctant to go to Nodes to consider on a regular basis since most of them I'll have already given my thoughts to.

Ideally what I would like to see are nodes which I've already considered to be removed from the list. This'd mean I could just read the entire page and judge each post on it's merits without first needing to check if this is one of the few posts I've not yet already judged. I don't read this page in order to read the posts,I use the rest of the site for that, I read it in order to consider nodes.

I asked if I could do this in the CB and it started a little bit of discussion with people having differing views (Thanks to footpad and virtualsue for their views there), but I thought this could make a good topic to discuss here.

Any views?

I'll try to clarify the points I made in the CB:

This isn't a bad idea and would be "nice to have." However, since:

    • Most recently considered nodes appear first
    • There are fairly clear visual indicators about whether or not you've already reviewed a node
    • This would probably require a user preference (and resulting changes in the Configuration screens/databases), it's not as trivial as you might think. Case in point, I for one want the option of being able to list all nodes under consideration.

In addition, there are (as of this writing), only ten nodes in NTC, it seems like it should have a lower priority than other needs. Since maintenance is usually handled on a volunteer basis when time is available *and* since there's a lot of things on the wish list, I'm not sure I'd expect to see this added very quickly.

I may be wrong though and frequently am.
