Write a complex server using Perl. Hrmmm ... that seems to be what my career is - writing complex appservers in Perl.

As for some stories ...

  • Motorola uses it to test their base-stations by simulating a telco switch. In fact, that tool (which I worked on) was used at Ground-Zero to look for cellphone signals. My former group-leader strapped a portable base-station on his back and they connected a laptop to it running Cygwin.
  • It makes over M$100/year for MasterCard as a reporting tool for their business customers. In that group, it replaced a Visual C++ app. A Java app was written to replace it, but the Java developers are now learning Perl.
  • The company I work at right now is using it as a major driver of new sales. We expect around 40% of our new sales to benefit directly from our Perl apps. We're a M$100+ company, with less than 200 employees, most of which are not IT.

I don't know about you, but those sounds like non-trivial applications.

Then there are Damian modules.... *sigh* ... that's not about being less-lazy -- that's about being on some really good drugs -- you know, there is no spoon. - flyingmoose
