Why not 8? Are we done with octal?
Are we done with octal?
I've been done by octal too many times :)
I hate that most programming languages insist on interpreting numbers with leading xeros as octal.
Personally, I've never seen any utility in octal that wasn't better served by hex.
The start of some sanity?
What about file permissions?
Using octal for 16-bit values is that it isolates bit 15 nicely.
FFFF(hex) = 177777(oct)
8000(hex) = 100000(oct)
7FFF(hex) = 077777(oct)
0000(hex) = 000000(oct)
If the left-most hex digit is 8 or higher, the high bit is set.
