Why I think this is better

  • This is not in your markup. It's a script include and then it "just works." It could easily have its selector tuned to only work in a certain context or with a certain class. It's quite generic already and could be made moreso/configurable.
  • It's HTML5 ready. If you use placeholders already, your stuff will be right in HTML5 browsers and will emulate the placeholder otherwise.
  • This degrades gracefully. Any solution that relies on JS while embedding related markup will look terrible and even be misleading UI if the JS fails. Without JS this will either 1) look right in HTML5 browers that have the attribute or 2) show nothing.
