in reply to RFC on suggestion of possible addition to Writeup Formatting Tips

Another possibility is to put a "quick-reference" at the bottom of the input page. While this might make the server output an extra 100 characters per page created or updated, there might be a significant improvement due to people seeing the form they need, instead of imagining they don't need to go to the Formatting Tips.

added later: The pop-up is a good idea, daeve .... astounding that a pop-up window is EVER a good idea, isn't it?

I'm in favor of a fairly basic "quick-reference" guide at the bottom of the input page but would also like to have a link to a full list of formating and linking information. A popup window would be good for this as it would allow switching from the reference information to the input page as needed.

popups have always been voted down around here in the past. some (like me,) don't like them. others point out usability problems, such as alternate browsers not capable of handling them. i agree that a link or cheatsheet would be useful, but i doubt it will be implemented as a popup window.

After thinking about your remarks and my own feelings concerning popups, I would like to withdraw the popup suggestion.

I use Mozilla, and have popups turned off for "All" sites, which I should have considered when making the original suggestion. The times that I have to use IE, they annoy me no end... Plus if the user does want a new window to open there is (in most newer browsers anyway) the option for right-clicking on a link and having it come up in a new tab or window.

I still think a "cheatsheet" of the most commonly used markup and linking information below the text entry box on the input page with a link to a "complete" list of formating and linking information would be a helpful addition to the site.
