The Top 10 Perl/Programming Songs of All Time

OK, so I was assisting a fellow monk today in writing a Perl script to generate a random music playlist from multiple playlists.

This got me to thinkin' -- "Self, you being the music connoisseur that you are, what would your all-time favorites list look like?"

Well, that's where I started... and here's where I tragically ended up:

Sure :)

The Sex Pistols: sub mission();

Revolution. Today, 3 O'Clock. Meet behind the monkey bars.

I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code

Well if you have the Pistols you've gotta have the Clash, too!

$should_i="stay" || $should_i="go"; (if($i=="go") {$trouble} && if ($i=="stay"){2*$trouble} };)

syscall-ing $london;

#FFFFFF Riot is awesome!

There's also the much older WPERL: The Perl radio station, written way back when we didn't have any of this fancy spoiler stuff.

I get high on a buzz
Then a rush when I'm plugged in you
I connect
When I'm flush
You get love when told what to do

Wonderful electric
Wonderful electric
Wonderful electric
Cover me in you

I'm in love
I'm in love
I'm in love with a strict machine

Oh, and then there's the popular song from Electric Light Orchestra, "Eval Woman"...

So long at it seems to be mostly bad puns, let's see if anyone can recognize the bands/songs from the code snippets:

!( $this->isa( 'exit' )) until ($brooklyn) { } continue { sleep() } while ($america) { $america->DESTROY } `touch evil` @ways_to_die == 99 @fix == 1 $self->name eq 'mud' 7 + 7 == die unless $too_tough; if ( $you->buy('cd') ) { $self->get('porche') } require 'English' || die (! $self->believe() ) $technicolor->blur() $self == $hell

And, for the case of no real code involved, but search engines probably won't help you: (okay, with the one word names, there's probably more than one artist who have songs with these titles)

time if $pass && $fail split Test use less sleep push

I guess one hint -- they're in alphabetical order by artist name (as I just browsed through my listings)

Update: well, no one seems to have tried guessing in the ~40hrs it was up, so here are the answers:

Whatever it is that Perl put a spell on me Perl haze all in my eyes Don't know if it's day or night You got me blowin', blowin' my mind Is it tomorrow, or just the end of time?

Because I'm a parrothead, I have to suggest Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville: Wasted array again in Margaritaville.

At first I took parrothead to mean involvement with the Perl 6 VM--Say, say, say immediately came to mind.

Then my cultural literacy kicked in and saved me from further thoughts of Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson.

TGI says moo

There's always The Spice Girls, and "wanna-array".

thezip,
Am I the only one who noticed that you have some of your artists and genres mixed? In any case, I usually just have classic rock streaming in the background as noise filler. When I have the luxury of turning up music, I tend to lean towards Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, etc.

Cheers - L~R

Thanks L~R! Its fixed now.

Of course for the HTML writing monks wouldn't it be " Invader"?

Update: No one's mentioned Code Monkey yet . . .

Or the obscure: "Pony Boy" by the Allman Brothers Band . . . :)

Do you mean your favourite hack-background noise? Or rather the songs that make you go 'perl' ?

For my favourite background noise:

1. VNV-Nation: Saviour (vox)
2. Project Pitchfork: Timekiller
3. VNV-Nation: Standing (still)
4. Laibach: WAT
5. Jim Groce: Leroy Brown
6. Wumpskut: Thorns (Distant voices)
7. Type O-negative: My girlfriends girlfriend
8. Slayer: Disciple
9. Big Black: Kerosene
10. Rammstein: Sonne
I have to admit though, I normally put my entire multimedia disk on shuffle. So everything from Iron fist to Puff the magic dragon passes the revue.
Perlized songs? Hmmm..
1. less o-: My girlfriends keyboard?
2. PSP-Nation: Save your (work)
3. ...
That's never going to work...
Andromeda (ascendant, you know, with captain Hercules) running in the background seems to work well too...

if( exists $aeons{strange} ){ die $death unless ( $death%2 ) }
