You can get around the unfortunate choice of keys by using Variable Interpolation:

[% FOR line IN xml %]
[%  size_key = 'size';
    value_key = 'value';
    line.$size_key.$value_key %]
[% END %]

This assumes you are using Template::Toolkit, of course.
