... be enslaved|devoured|destroyed, presuming you are referring to extraterrestrials (which will be, therefore, far more advanced). Game over, man.

"Not notice" may have been another valid option.

    -- Ken

Hmm true, that option isn't even in my original proposal which has a bit more options.

Though, that might have already happened, with the mice and dolphins, so this poll can be understood to ask about another species after those.

"... mice and dolphins, so this poll can be understood to ask about another species after those."

Actually, my initial thought, which prompted the reply, was about the group of species in the order Octopoda.

Something as different from us as a mollusc, does tend to go unnoticed, when considering intelligent creatures that share the planet with us.

While I wasn't really trying to provoke a philosophical discussion on the subject, it does beg the question whether we're intelligent enough to recognise another intelligent species.

Calvin & Hobbs said it best: The surest sign that there is intelligent life out there is that none of it has ever tried to contact us.
For those not familiar with this one quote, they're standing in front of a giant tree stump w/ litter all around it. And on a related note:

RIMMER: Lister, don't you ever stop and wonder: why are we here? What's the grand purpose?

LISTER: Why does it have to be such a big deal? Why can't it be like, like, human beings are a planetary disease? Like the Earth's got German measles or facial herpes, right? And that's why all of the other planets give us such a wide berth. It's like, "Oh, don't go near Earth! It's got human beings on it, they're contagious!"

RIMMER: So you're saying, Lister, you're an intergalactic, pus-filled cold sore! At last, Lister, we agree on something.

... infect them with multiple confrontationally competing strands of monotheistic religion and thereby bring their civilization down to the level of ours. Alas.

Earth still waits for the first intelligent species.

If we're talking about another species, i would think the humans would be there creators, and hence treat them like second-class citizens, much like they deny but do in the Star Trek universe.

Assuming you mean extra-terrestrial race, well, it is likely all the emotions will follow suit until whatever happens happens. That's simply an unpredictable relationship. For that, i would have added an option of "Cautiously try to treat them as equals."

Humanity shall do something... But I bet that humanity will do nothing useful, this is not a new history at all

When Dreissena polymorpha appeared first time on USA, the americans did... nothing.

Now, we, humans, can not fight this simple small mussel creating damages of hundreds of millions of dollars in our water and energy resources. Burning two or three billions more each year.

We can't eliminate it. Government plays with glossy drones in some desert of the world.

Frogs, rabbits, ants, birds, rats, minks, jellyfishes... biological invasions occur just right now every day. Sadly we don't care to much about it, look for aliens and simply wait. Then we put tons of money into the new black hole each year

The stupidest form of life can beat us, and it does all the time.

If humanity is still around when another intelligent species appears on Earth, I think that all of the first five choices will occur simultaneously. Some people will think of them as rivals; others will try to be friends. Still others will revere them.

Of those who are afraid of them, one group will try to oppress them and another will try to hide from them.

Most likely, none of these strategies will work.

I suspect they will watch and wait until we are long gone.

Why complicate things by moving in on the indigenous when one can simply wait until they self destruct?

That isn't the least bit pessimistic is it?

...the majority is always wrong, and always the last to know about it...

Since Carl Sagan made sure there was no reference to religion on the golden records included on Voyager 1 and 2, I predict first contact will be missionaries.
