Probably not original, but Piet Koornhof (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piet_Koornhof) famously said that every time he made a joke, people thought it was a policy statement. And every time he made a policy statement, people thought he was joking.

Oddly enough, cooking is the thing I do the same over and over again with unpredictable, inconsistent results! You are correct, I am not a cook. :-)
