Are you saying I "do nothing at all"?

Nothing at all? So I'm accusing you of not even breathing? Of course not. Prior to your comment, you likely did nothing at all visible with regard to the feature you were commenting on. You appear to even claim as much. (And you likely got no shit regarding that feature.)

No, talking about something is just one thing somebody can do related to that thing. And doing visible things other than talking most definitely can lead to getting more shit. I actually have plenty of evidence of that (despite the nature of a forum website being such that, by far, the most likely way for your actions to be visible is for you to write about them).

if you don't talk about what you're not doing [...] those who can apply their own patches get more done than those who can't

So you really want to give me more shit, eh?

Yes, the "patching" problem is a serious problem. That was why we offered you and you accepted the power to apply your own patches for the express purpose of greatly reducing the impact of that problem. And you didn't get it done. So I guess being able to apply your own patches isn't a golden cure.

But I don't believe I ever gave you shit about that. I never saw much point to giving shit to volunteers for not finishing what they took on to finish. "It doesn't do any good and it just annoys the [volunteer]". I also think its pretty rude. And my experience is that the most common outcome from somebody volunteering to do something is that that person doesn't finish it (and no, I'm not just talking about projects that I was involved in). And yes, that includes things that I volunteer for, of course.

it is one of the short list of well defined projects you've assigned to yourself. I'm not going to interlope on that.

I haven't assigned it to myself. I've just mentioned that I'd already written code to try to address it. You even have access to that code. Or you could start from scratch. If you start from scratch without even asking for a look at what thoughts I'd already put into it, then I might be a bit annoyed. But I'll certainly try not to show it much as you will have gotten it done and I certainly have not. So me and my annoyance can go suck eggs as far as I'm concerned.

I think it is pretty clear that I haven't assigned it to myself when I say things like:

Here's hoping I or somebody finds the time and motivation to revive or recreate that work

But saying things that clearly indicate not-X is certainly not proof against others being quite convinced of X, I can tell you. :)

My thoughts on this feature are visible (and have long been so) at tye . There is code that tries to implement those thoughts currently running at PerlMonks (but, IIRC, that code is only active when viewing tye ). I strongly suspect that there is a patch that was applied to get that code onto PerlMonks so I could test it. And I think that patch even got a couple of comments (but perhaps they were just chatterbox comments).

If you manage to dig up the code, please post it. There is even a chance that another monk is still interested in trying to get it working (despite me rudely never getting around to digging up the code for him/her). Posting the code would certainly increase the odds of somebody finishing the feature (even me).

And the feature already seems more likely to be finished sooner at this point, just from you having decided to talk more about it. "Just" talking about something can often be a constructive step in getting something finished.
