I'm sure that the PHP SimpleXML code may be similar to one of the perl XML modules on cpan, but I'm not really interested in reading up on it to find out which package it may be similar to.

Instead, since it seems like you're asking an XPath question, I'd suggest you check out an XPath documentation source to figure out how to query what you want.
