merlyn has an article coming out in which he attempts to turn File::Find inside out. (i.e. with structure similiar to a filehandle iterator, rather than a functional callback) I don't know when its scheduled for publication, but you should keep an eye out for it. I think it address several of the concerns you raise here, in an an entirely different way.

[Corion]: dazz: BTW, the following should work (no Image::Magick installed, so untested): open(my $fh, '<', \$jpegbuffer); $image->Read(file= > $fh);
[choroba]: Hm, it seems my humble contributions to CPAN pass their test suites with the PERL5OPT set
[Corion]: choroba: I think most of my distributions still do, but some use Module::Install from inc and some use a modulino-style Makefile.PL to provide information to the author tests, so I certainly need/want to retest mine
