Enhancing the new "display view"

by choroba (Cardinal)

Today I noticed that clicking on my reply doesn't open it in the "Edit" mode, but in a new "Display View". I like the change, but I'd appreciate adding an "Edit" option among "reply", "msg", "d/l", and "select" on my nodes:

Blah blah blah...

($q=q:Sq=~/;[c](.)(.)/;chr(-||-|5+lengthSq)`"S|oS2"`map{chr |+ord }map{substrSq`S_+|`|}3E|-|`7**2-3:)=~y+S|`+$1,++print+eval$q,q,a,

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

    I see an "Edit" option near the top of the page just under the "Reputation" line rather than grouped with the other options.

    Cheers,

    JohnGG

      That's only for the top node. I'd like to have a shortcut for my replies, too.
      ($q=q:Sq=~/;[c](.)(.)/;chr(-||-|5+lengthSq)`"S|oS2"`map{chr |+ord }map{substrSq`S_+|`|}3E|-|`7**2-3:)=~y+S|`+$1,++print+eval$q,q,a,

        Ah! I think I see what you mean. You'd like an "Edit" link included in your replies when viewing the OP's node and all replies in that thread?

        Cheers,

        JohnGG

        Do you have an example? I went to a top node that I had replied to. I clicked on my reply, and got the display mode, with an Edit link just below the reputation line.

        Update: I now see what you're talking about - you are referring to before the node is open in display mode. I agree completely.

        Wish granted. Happy Hanukkwanzmas! :-)

    On the other hand, is there a setting to revert to the old style?

    With the rise and rise of 'Social' network sites: 'Computers are making people easier to use everyday'
    Examine what is said, not who speaks -- Silence betokens consent -- Love the truth but pardon error.
    "Science is about questioning the status quo. Questioning authority". I knew I was on the right track :)
    In the absence of evidence, opinion is indistinguishable from prejudice. Not understood.

      IMO, settings for style should not revert, per se, they should allow the newer behavior, and perhaps default to checked for newcomers.

      In any case, a preview would have been nice.

    Weird. After Stumbitting a node, the new text is on the bottom rather than the top. As that is off the screen for me, i don't see it unless i scroll to it.

    This is also a bit inconsistent now, because the intial posting of a node has the preview on top. Further editing is now on bottom. That's going to take some getting used to.

      Well spotted. I went back and forth on that quite a bit, but settled on having the edit box remain at the top and the rendered form displayed below that, mainly because, for some node types, there is "yet more to the page than what I just edited", e.g. a reply thread, and I didn't want to have the edit box jammed in between the "main" post and the "rest of the page".

      Personally, after having used a wide variety of forum and wiki software, I have learned that "there is no standard", and one must always scroll down to see if what appears to be missing is simply off screen. But I don't want to force that on everybody.

      PS- Sorry for all the "sund1al-like" wacko-formatting... ;-)

      I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon stuffed with 16,000 zombies.
        Not sure if this is the right place for a suggestions, but when replying/commenting to a post, the parent post is only shown once at the top and further on replaced with previews.

        IMHO it would be more consistent to keep the parent above the edit field and the preview below.

        I'd volunteer to implement a JS toggle to hide parent or preview, if it matters.

        Cheers Rolf

        PS: good work! :)

        Thanx for looking into it. I'm guessing making it an option is well, not an option. :)
