Editing your writeup is now a separate action from viewing a thread and voting on replies

on Jun 13, 2016 at 20:12 UTC ( [id://1165503]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Historically, when you view one of your writeups (e.g. a CUFP post), you are given a form right there in which to edit your post if you wish. The form fields for that were in the same form as the node voting buttons. This enabled surprising behavior, described here. Therefore, I have removed the "edit" form from the main display view of your posts and pushed it off into a separate edit page. So now, if you visit one of your writeups, you won't see an edit form right there, but you will see an 'Edit' link in the upper right.

This change has already been in effect for about three months (as I mentioned) for certain sections — Obfuscated Code, Perl Poetry, Meditations, maybe others — and is now in effect for all sections: CUFP, PMD, Obfu, Meditations, News, SoPW, Tutorials, Inner Scriptorium, Poetry, Snippets, Code Catacombs, even Craft, as well as your replies in any section, and any posts of yours which have been thrown into the Off Topic bin.

Update: Based on feedback from users such as BrowserUK below, I have added a user display option to have the writeup edit form directly on the display page, below the writeup, as previously. However, it is now enclosed in a separate form from the voting buttons, so that the "surprising behavior" can no longer occur.

I like the change. Thank you.

I guess this also opens up the opportunity to add an [edit] link to the "options menu" ([reply][/msg] [d/l] [select) beside each node in the RAT view? If so, that would be a really nice feature (and yes, if my home computer weren't down with a broken hard drive, I'd do it myself).

Update: Thanks jdporter for implementing it! This edit is assurance that it works :-D.

      Good idea. Done. :-)

I am in favor of the change. But note (as I think I mentioned in chatter early on) that when a similar change was done, it resulted in an increase in the number of duplicate postings (as people failed to find the "edit" link before finding their brower's "back" button). Or was it an opposite change was done (for one section) and the frequency of dups appeared to drop (for that section)?

The work to deal with people hitting "back" and then hitting "create" again probably needs to be raised in priority now that this change has been made.

Thinking aloud: Should the Tidings entry include a link to this node as it goes into further detail?

Quite so, yes. I have created a new Tidings entry, as this change isn't really the same as the previous one. Thanks!

Cool. You're doing a great job! Please, keep it up.

There is another bug resulting from this work. You can no longer edit a categorized answer since the 'editinvote' element no longer actually allows 'edit'. Adding an "edit" link will not solve this particular problem because of the hokey way CatQ+A was implemented (an "edit" link would just send you to the "Permission Denied" page).

Note even the new option at the end of display settings works around this problem.

      Thanks. I will fix.

      Note even the new option

I'm not sure how to parse that. Did you mean "not"? I was able to edit a CatQ and a CatA by using the new option to "edit in display".

(Hold on... It may be because I'm in QandAEditors.)

On further reflection... Did this ever work? I thought that once a monk submitted a CatQ/A, it became owned by QandAEditors and was no longer editable by the submittor. No?

I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon stuffed with 16,000 zombies.

Sorry, yes, "Note" should have been "Not" as you guessed.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I believe that the old state was that when you looked at "your" submissions, you could edit them directly (even through they were not "owned" by you). I'm pretty sure that people have been editing those w/o having to ask Q+A Editors to do it for them.

Perhaps somebody who has tried that more recently than I could chime in (but tried before these recent changes).

So my guess is that there was code in 'editinvote' (or somewhere) that honored original_author not just author_user.

I take it that means that for those of us that neither find the behaviour neither surprising nor any kind of a problem, are forced into a change that seems (to me) to be a retrograde step in terms of the UI?

In the absence of evidence, opinion is indistinguishable from prejudice. Not understood.

How much do you hate it?

      :-)

I wouldn't say I hate it. It just seems to take two steps at each stage in place of a previous 1.

Eg. Due to a browser bug, my posts frequently end up with extraneous text appended.

With the old system, when I commit the post, I can immediately see if there has been such an addition, and then right below I can delete it and re-commit.

With the new system, this does not show up in the "this is how it renders" part, so I have to go to the display view to see if anything has been appended; if it has, switch back to the edit view to delete it; then back to the display view to check it has actually gone (and nothing else has been added); and if it hasn't (or has), back to the edit view...

I appreciate that I'm one very few Opera users that is afflicted by this particular problem; but none the less, it just seems retrograde to introduce this modality to the site in order to "fix" something that had been perfectly fine for over a decade.

As (presumably) the old code is probably still there, if there were an option for me to configure my settings to revert to that old way, I would utilise it.
