Perl 6 section?

by malloc (Pilgrim)
on Jan 25, 2002 at 21:58 UTC ( [id://141563]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

I had the opportunity to attend yet another truly awesome, mind blowing Damian Conway talk (YATAMBDCT) recently, known around here as thedamian. This time around, however, we spent an hour at the end discussing Perl 6 with the aid of Perl 6 super ninja Dan Sugalski among others. Truly fascinating stuff, and it became clear that there were more questions than there was time. I think this situation is only going to grow and grow, so i humbly propose we get all proactive and create a Perl 6 section. We could start it as rumor control/design discussion, and some time in the cold dark future, upon release of Perl 6 and Parrot, it would be a great place to go for integration issues as well. Not to mention all of the syntactic sugar that will be specific to this section (Can you say DWIM operator?!) as well as a whole slew of OO and Parrot questions. What do the elders and bodhisattva's think?

It's probably a bit early to be worrying about Perl 6 issues to a great extent, much less to warrent a full section on it. I'd much rather see people prepend node titles with "(Perl 6)" at least until the language itself it released. Once it comes out, we may need a P6 specific section, or a way to flag a node as being P5 or P6 specific.

I'm not sure a separate Perl 6 section would be useful. It seems orthogonal to the existing section structure.

Do you have a question about Perl 6? Use Seekers of Perl Wisdom. Have you discovered something interesting you'd like to share? A writeup in Meditations would be appropriate. Of course, I'm waiting for those first Perl 6 entries in Code and Snippets. ;-)

I'm with brother Masem on this one. Better to just put "Perl 6" in the node title. Although we'll probably regret that five years from now when everyone's running Perl 6. (FAQ entry from 2007: "If you have a question specifically about Perl 5, please indicate that in the node title. Not many people run it any more.")

malloc++ I was thinking the same thing.

I believe that enough Perl6 stuff is going on that it merits its own section.

New section? OK. But I'm more interested to hear what TheDamian had to say at the meeting!

I think it would be a excellent idea to start a Perl 6 section. Of course that would deal with everything Perl 6 (SOPW, Meditations, Code, etc. all rolled together). There are a several good reasons to do so since it would make:
    • things interesting from a historical aspect.
    • avoiding the topic easier for those not interested.
    • things easier to sort out later (5 vs. 6 issues).
I can appreciate people wanting to be on the bleeding edge, but think about how many 5.0 shops are still around and not likely to change anytime soon. I can say with certainty that our University won't be movng to Perl 6 until it has been fully vetted/stable for at least a year.

Naturally I'll play with it at home as soon as it's available.

Maybe it's possible to duplicate the Perl related sections we now have. That way, when Perl 6 is common (and it will be), the Perl 6 sections can be made default, and until then, they can just be in a mere nodelet.

P.S. I hate vi and actually think ed is easier to use.
      /me changes $EDITOR

      2;0 juerd@ouranos:~$ perl -e'undef christmas' Segmentation fault 2;139 juerd@ouranos:~$

It's a difficult situation. My first thought was to make a slight change that would lead to a smooth transition (less work for our gracious, and surely busy leader). Maybe with the next major upgrade to the Everything Engine a more complex solution could be implemented. But either way it warrants a careful, well thought out solution.

We can always leave the default version (5/6) to a user setting.

You could just preface any nodes with "Perl 6 - blah blah blah" and put them in Meditations, Code or whatever. I certainly am looking forward to this new implementation.
